This week our class read the first chapter of the Pearl, by John Steinbeck. My mom said this was a sad novel. I can see why. I am just into the first chapter and a baby has been stung by a scorpion and the doctor will not help him. There is Kino, an Indian pearl diver, Juana, his wife, and Coyotito, their baby. They are a poor family living in a brush house. Kino is eating his small breakfast and Juana is mashing corn with a mortar and pestle when a ray of light shines on one of the ropes of Coyotito's hanging box. Juana and Kino are frozen when they see a scorpion climbing down towards Coyotito. Kino slowly approaches the scorpion but Coyotito hits the rope, the scorpion falls and strikes Coyotito on the shoulder. The baby screams and draws attention to the little hut. Juana tries to suck the venom out of Coyotito's shoulder while she tells Kino that they have to bring him to the doctor. The crowd follows Kino's family to the doctor's manor. Kino is greeted by an Indian who is the doctor's servant. He tells the doctor the emergency, but the doctor is greedy and selfish and doesn't treat the baby because they do not have any money. Kino is so angry at the doctor that he punches the gate made of steel. He looks down and his hand is bleeding. I thought the first chapter was very dark but still interesting to read.

This week, the seventh grade class took a field trip to the California Science Center. Although it was extremely hot and humid outside, we still had a great time. A man named Leon brought us to a large room with many holes in the wall. He told us we had to make roller coasters with tubes and rubber. Our team dominated the loop-de-loop challenge with an astonishing six loops! After that, we went to the actual Science Center where we saw the Endeavor in a ginormous room. After that we went to the Body Works show. I thought it was so amazing that it was the oldest room in the whole building. It showed us how our body keeps in balance with temperature and oxygen. When the show ended, we could explore the room where the show was held. There were axolotls and cockroaches to show how thier blood flowed. There were gerbils and lizards to show their body temperature. The surgery room was disgusting! it showed a video of a real life heart surgery. The reproduction room was also quite gross. There were glass cases of real human embryos and fetuses. After that, we ate lunch at the cafeteria. Then, Mrs. Hurtado brought our group to the Ecosystems exhibits. In the Island zone, there was a statue of a Galapagos Tortoise and tropical fish tanks. In the polar zone, there was a real life polar bear pelt and a giant ice wall. In the desert zone, there was a roadrunner, a turkey vulture, a pack rat, fire ants, turtles, lizards and Gila monster. The kelp forest had lots of fish, lobsters, and sharks. http://californiasciencecenter.org/ |
