![]() http://www.weebly.com/editor/main.php This week in English Language Arts class, we read a short story called Harrison Bergeron. This short story was written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. This story was very entertaining unlike some books I have read. It had romance, action, humor, but most importantly, DEATH. Mt classmates did not like the ending, but I loved it. The year was 2081, sixty-five years into the future. Everyone was supposed to be equal, except for the General and the H-P men. Mr. and Mrs. Bergeron are watching television when a news report comes on telling people to be cautious of Harrison Bergeron who wants to overthrow the government. Just then, Harrison bursts through the door while the couple is watching. He claims himself the Emperor and wants to have an Empress. A ballerina stand up bravely and is claimed by Harrison. He then starts ripping the handicaps and weights off of everybody and takes his mates hand. They start to dance and jump while the musicians play. They jump so high that they touch the ceiling and kiss it. Then they kiss each other. The General comes in with a large shotgun and fires twice at them. They die before they hit the floor. Harrison's mother is listening but is too stupid to remember what happened. It ends with a funny tone but also has sad happy and shocking tones. I enjoyed the story and thought that it was interesting to have an ending where the main character dies.

On Monday, January 18, 2016 was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Martin Luther King Jr. was a extraordinarily important person who changed the course of history for the United States of America and for African Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. He married Correta Scott King in 1953 and had four children. King is known for giving his famous speech "I Have a Dream". King was such a gifted student that he enrolled in college at the age of 15. Because of his "civil disobedience", Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed twenty nine times. Sadly, King was assassinated April 4, 1968. King was a very important individual including Rosa Parks and Malcom X that changed everything for black people. It is very unfortunate that someone ill minded and insane shot him while he was embracing the nice scenery on his motel balcony. Luckily, the man who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. was caught and arrested trying to escape the United States of America with a fake passport. In class, we talked about the meaning of the "n" word and how it should never be spoken at any circumstances whatsoever. The word probably started at the beginning of the 20th century. The word became meaner and meaner. Today, there is still racism everywhere and we need to stop it. Even after Martin Luther King Jr. changed the hearts of so many people, there are some who still hate. Everyone is equal and is equally loved by God. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&
This week in ELA class, the seventh grade students of Saint John Eudes School learned how to properly read a poem. We were given a small sheet of paper with big, bold words saying: How to Read a Poem. Ms. Stronks opened up a power point that contained each steps necessary to properly read a beautiful piece of literature. The rules corresponded with the other set of rules on our piece of paper. Except we had to fill in the blank after we learned from the power point. The first step was very simple. Show no fear. It is okay if you do not understand everything on the first reading. The second step was read the title. Then, stop and think or predict what the poem is about. After that, read the poem all the way through. The fourth step is to annotate. What does this mean, you might ask. Annotating is underlining, highlighting, or commenting on things in the poem that you like, reminds you of something, think is interesting, or find confusing. Next, use a dictionary to look up any words you do not know. The sixth step is to identify the narrator. This is important because you need to find out the narrators tone or his impact on the story. Then, notice shifts or changes like but or and. Next, you need to figure out the structure. Finally, read the poem over again because you might find more meaning to the poem. https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/text/how-read-poem-0
Winter was finally here! We were off of school and could hardly wait for Christmas to come. My brothers and I were very excited when Christmas Eve finally arrived. We laid the cookies and milk out, then read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' before we went to bed. We woke up full of energy and ready to open up presents. I got tons of candy and chocolates and so did my brothers. I finally received Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront for Christmas. Then all of us opened up a huge gift that ended up being Guitar Hero 4. It came with two guitars, a microphone, and a giant drum set. Now my family and I can all play together on this awesome video game. The next day we traveled to San Diego to see my grandparents, cousins, and aunts and uncles. We had a really good time together at the beach. When we got home I built some legos that I got for Christmas. I built an RV, a Star Wars airship, and a AT-AT from Star Wars also. New Years Eve was really fun because we popped fireworks after the ball dropped in New York. When we went to our grandma's house for New Years dinner, my cousins and I played a really fun game called Sardines. We also played the old Battlefront inside and had a really good time. Even though I was really upset when it was time for school again, I still had a great time in Winter break. At ELA, we have to do a mobile and talk about the new year and also the old one. This year, I plan to be kinder to everyone especially to my brothers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_holiday
