The short story, “The Pie” by Gary Soto, takes place in the barrio during Gary’s childhood. It tells the story of Gary, a young boy at the time, who wants to steal a pie without being caught. He must fight against guilt, a terrible feeling, in order to achieve this goal. Because Gary is a Christian, he does not want to sin by stealing the pie. Gary must also fight against Cross-Eyed Johnny, another child, who wants the pie for himself. First, Gary contemplates stealing the pie from the bakery he is in. Since he is Christian it is hard for him to steal it. Gary hides the pie under his Frisbee and leaves the store. Then, Gary sits on the curb of the street and starts to eat the pie. He feels guilty when neighbors stare at him. After that, another kid named Cross-Eyed Johnny asks if he could have some of the pie. Gary refuses and Johnny walks away in despair. Next, Gary finishes the stolen pie and is filled with guilt when a driver honks his horn. Gary throws his Frisbee and retrieves it. He continues playing with the Frisbee until he is bored and thirsty. Finally, Gary picks up his Frisbee and heads home. He helps his sister with a school project and drinks some water. As the story ends, Gary crawls under the house and listens to the rumblings in the pipe. After a while, he crawls back out and stares at the glare of the pie tin. The story leaves off with an interesting message. “I knew sin was what you took and didn’t give back” Overall this short story was bland and did not contain a real conflict. However, the story did use figurative language which made the story a little interesting.

I was sitting on my couch in my living room, watching the election. At first, Donald Trump was winning, then Hillary. It was extremely close, but Donald Trump won the election. He will be our president for the next four years. Trump has no political or millitary background but still made it so far. Even though he has no background in politics, I think that Trump will make a better president than Hillary. He has made many mistakes and caused many people to be offended, but Hillary is a liar and caused many deaths of US soldiers in the Middle East. Throughout the primaries and speeches, Trump sounded like he didn't care and was not taking anything seriously. But after winning the election, Donald Trump sounded like he would take his responsibility seriously. He thanked Hillary and cheered with his fans after his victory. I was sitting with my parents and grandparents while watching the Election. While I was eating dinner, I saw that it was neck and neck. But over time, more and more states became red. Even after winning California, Hillary was losing. I was laughing because I knew that a reality TV show host was going to be our president. After he won, the Democrats at Hillary's convention were crying and the Republicans at Trump's convention were cheering. Riots broke out over time and more people got upset. I just hope that Trump will be a good president.

It takes place in a kingdom sometime in the Middle Ages. A fictitious plague is destroying the town and killing the villagers in gruesome ways, in a matter of hours. The prince, Prospero, is not frightened and uses a fortress to house many nobles and dukes from the plague. While the plague is destroying the town, Prospero and his friends live peacefully in the castle. After seven months, Prospero decides to host a masquerade, a party which involves people wearing masks. There are seven rooms in the castle where the people party in, except for the black and scarlet colored room. Inside the red and scarlet room is a clock which makes a large noise each hour. When the clock strikes each hour, the dancers stop dancing, the musicians stop playing, and the nobles stop eating. This is because they admire and embrace the loud sound, each time it rings. Towards midnight, a man in a plague doctor cloak and bloody mask is noticed. The nobles are frightened by this, so Prospero orders his men to catch him. While they look into the man's eyes, they stop in their tracks. Prospero is angered and takes matters into his own hands. He takes a dagger and chases the man down the seven rooms until they reach the black and scarlet room. That is when the man turns around. Prospero drops the dagger and dies. When the others reveal the identity of the man, there appears to be no one there. This is because the man is the red death itself. It slowly kills everybody else. The clock stops and the Red Death rules over the castle.
