In the short story, “Props for Faith” by Ursula Hegi, it takes place in Germany after World War II. It tells the story of Hannah and Renate, two best friends, who want to rebuild their friendship after Hannah offends Renate. Hannah must heal Renate’s under developed leg in order to achieve this goal. In order to heal her leg, Hannah believes she can use holy water to heal her leg after a priest used holy water on her bicycle. First, Hannah hears that the maid thinks Renate’s mother, a midwife, is not her real mother but instead a Gypsy. Hannah then wonders if the maid was right. Then, Renate invites a mean girl to her house and doesn’t play with Hannah. Hannah gets mad and offends Renate by saying the gypsies didn’t want her. After that, Renate’s mother banned Hannah from Renate’s house and is not allowed to play with her. Next, Hannah tries to think of a way to rebuild her friendship. She then realizes she can use holy water to heal her bad leg. Finally, she sneaks into the church, steals holy water, and invites Renate to her house. She puts the holy water on her leg, but it does not work. As the story ends, the water does not heal her leg, but instead her friendship. I liked this story because it tells the reader about German culture and vocabulary, but also tells the story about the friendship of two girls. Even though her leg does not heal, the story has a happy ending. http://gooftroopers.com/subjects/ela/jr.-great-books/props-for-faith

During the walk, I found many poets that intrigued me. One poet that caught my attention was Carol Ann Duffy. She made humorous poems and is the Poet Laureate of Great Britain. Duffy was very independent, which is one of the reasons why I like her is. Another poet that I enjoyed learning about was the famous poet, Edgar Allan Poe. His poems were very dark and depressing because they talked about death and misery. One poem that he wrote was called “The Raven” which we annotated during class. Maya Angelou, who is an extremely popular, African poet, stood out to me as well. She uses many examples of figurative language including metaphors, similes, and personification throughout her poem. I really liked Lewis Carrol because his poems talk about animals such as crocodiles and mice in his poems. The animals are either figurative or literal animals. Thomas Hardy caught my attention because he has the most amazing, curly mustache ever. His poems were also intriguing and used many figurative languages. My poet, Billy Collins, was very humorous in his poems. I enjoyed learning about the modern American poet, Billy Collins. Many of his poems are very humorous and unique from other traditional poems, which tend to focus on death and darkness. While many of Collins’s poems are dark, he still maintains an amusing aspect to serious topics. His poems are full of detail and have countless examples of figurative language which allows the reader a more enjoyable experience. Because Billy Collins is a “modern” poet, his poems are detailed with current issues, creating poems that are more relatable and understandable than “classical” poems or verses from different eras and cultures. http://poemhunter.com/
This week, Ms. Stronks gave us a packet about "The Road Not Taken" and "The Choice". I chose to do number eleven in the packet for my oral presentation. The question was, “In both ‘The Road Not Taken’ and ‘The Choice’, the poets tell how they made their choices and how they view their choices years after they made them. Complete this chart to compare these poems.” In “The Road Not Taken”, Robert Frost has the choice to take the road that was traveled by everyone else and the road less traveled by. He chose the second road because it wanted wear and wasn’t used as much. This shows that Frost wants to be different than everyone else and chooses the thing that everyone else does not take or want. Years later, Frost is either happy or sad that he chose the road less traveled by because it “made all the difference”. In “The Choice”, Dorothy Parker has the choice between a rich man and a poor man. She chooses the poorer man because he was kind and sang a sweet, loving song. Years later, Parker is not happy with her choice and believes she is crazy for picking the poor man. This might be because the poor man did not have much money, making Parker struggle economically. These choices deeply impact the rest of these poets' lives. The impacts are both negative and positively in both poems. http://www.bartleby.com/119/1.html
