This week in ELA class, the seventh grade students of Saint John Eudes School learned how to properly read a poem. We were given a small sheet of paper with big, bold words saying: How to Read a Poem. Ms. Stronks opened up a power point that contained each steps necessary to properly read a beautiful piece of literature. The rules corresponded with the other set of rules on our piece of paper. Except we had to fill in the blank after we learned from the power point. The first step was very simple. Show no fear. It is okay if you do not understand everything on the first reading. The second step was read the title. Then, stop and think or predict what the poem is about. After that, read the poem all the way through. The fourth step is to annotate. What does this mean, you might ask. Annotating is underlining, highlighting, or commenting on things in the poem that you like, reminds you of something, think is interesting, or find confusing. Next, use a dictionary to look up any words you do not know. The sixth step is to identify the narrator. This is important because you need to find out the narrators tone or his impact on the story. Then, notice shifts or changes like but or and. Next, you need to figure out the structure. Finally, read the poem over again because you might find more meaning to the poem. https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/text/how-read-poem-0
