In the short story, “Props for Faith” by Ursula Hegi, it takes place in Germany after World War II. It tells the story of Hannah and Renate, two best friends, who want to rebuild their friendship after Hannah offends Renate. Hannah must heal Renate’s under developed leg in order to achieve this goal. In order to heal her leg, Hannah believes she can use holy water to heal her leg after a priest used holy water on her bicycle. First, Hannah hears that the maid thinks Renate’s mother, a midwife, is not her real mother but instead a Gypsy. Hannah then wonders if the maid was right. Then, Renate invites a mean girl to her house and doesn’t play with Hannah. Hannah gets mad and offends Renate by saying the gypsies didn’t want her. After that, Renate’s mother banned Hannah from Renate’s house and is not allowed to play with her. Next, Hannah tries to think of a way to rebuild her friendship. She then realizes she can use holy water to heal her bad leg. Finally, she sneaks into the church, steals holy water, and invites Renate to her house. She puts the holy water on her leg, but it does not work. As the story ends, the water does not heal her leg, but instead her friendship. I liked this story because it tells the reader about German culture and vocabulary, but also tells the story about the friendship of two girls. Even though her leg does not heal, the story has a happy ending. http://gooftroopers.com/subjects/ela/jr.-great-books/props-for-faith
