Although we didn't do that much in English Language Arts class, we did finish "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck. In chapter five, Kino wakes up to find Juana leaving the hut with the pearl in her hand. This enrages Kino, so he follows Juana to the beach. She is about to throw the pearl in the ocean when Kino grabs her arm and beats Juana up. Then, Kino leaves her at the beach and walks off. She is walking to the hut when she sees Kino and a dead man with a bloody throat. Kino knows that people are going to hunt them down. Juana saves Coyotito before the hut completely burns down. Kino tells Juana that they need to go to the capital. In chapter six Kino, Juana, and Coyotito travel to the capital on foot. They are about half way there until they spot trackers trying to hunt Kino down. They hide behind a log and try to think of a plan to escape the trackers. They run up the mountain and hide in a cave. When the trackers were asleep, Kino went to their camp and was going to take them out with a knife but Coyotito cried. One of the hunters thought it was a coyote when one thought it was a baby. The one with the rifle shot the gun to scare the source of the crying off. Unfortunately, the bullet hit Coyotito. Then, Kino killed the three trackers and they went back to La Paz. The couple then threw the pearl out into the ocean. I thought this ending was really sad. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/pearl/section5.rhtml
